"If the big Christian ministries use ten per cent

of their income to help the poor in the societies

things will be much better"

One thing we discover about Prophet Ezra Aniebue is his practical approach to issues. If you listen to his sermons or watch his videos, you will come off better. His approach to sermons is 21st Century. No wonder when his messages were encoded on www.nigeriansermons.com, there was a deluge of responses. Almost a year after, more people still write in on the impacts of his messages on their economic, moral and spiritual lives. The General Overseer of Mountain of Praise, a church where miracles and testimonies flow in ceaseless measure, Prophet Aniebue ministers in power and the prophetic. A mentor to many, his life is a great example to peple who have had the fortune to deal with him. In this interview conducted by Bola Adewara, the prophet handles some issues in Christianity. Excerpts.

From your perception of Christianity here in Nigeria, do we still have the old time Christianity?
Absolutely, I think the main thing is that in Matthew 8: 8, when the centurion said ‘don't come into my house, speak the word only … The old time Christianity speaks the word. What may be happening now is that there is so much emphasis on materialism and where more people are into material things compared to the old time when the emphasis was more on heaven. So may be this is a misapplication of the fact that I'm here on earth so I have to get all that I can. But I think what is missing is the balance.
However, there are still some few. Remember when Elijah said to the Lord ‘all the prophets are killed. Everything is destroyed' and God told him, Excuse me, I still have a remnant'. So there are still people who God has reserved who may not be well known, but still subscribe to full gospel from Genesis to Revelation. In a hopeless situation, there is still hope.

How were you called into the ministry?
My background was in the Catholic Church. But God used my wife to get me born again. I was saying then that I was already born again and I cant be born again twice but she insisted and we went back and forth for about four years before I finally got born again in a Baptist Church. I got baptized and from there we moved into the Full Gospel Church. There was a day I heard an audible voice, the Lord said to me, you are a pastor and I said ok. So I went to a Church and a woman came and said the Lord said I should tell you, you are a pastor. Then we began to grow in the Lord. This was in the late 1980s early 1990s. So one of its things that happened was that we just kept going to Covenant Church and attending home fellowship.

When we joined the home fellowship, the people in charge said I have to take over the leadership of the fellowship, I said forget it, I'm not interest. So they made me an assistant. We met three times in a week in my house and there was this hunger for the Lord. In the home fellowship we had about 50 couples.

One day, the congregation was praying for me, I was in the middle and I saw a man in white robe, he walked in and said to me “why don't you establish a place of worship where people will come and praise God”. Then he said to me, ‘the name is of the place shall be Mountain of Praise'. He said nobody has registered it. The Lord said to me, ‘I want you to quit your job, your friend will take over the job and I will give you money to enter into the ministry”. And that was how it started.

After seven years in the ministry, the Lord said, ‘You are a prophet'. I said, ‘I don't need that title, I can hide under a bishop'. He said ‘no, no, no'. Then the Lord began to lead me through the bible.

One of the challenges of this age is the balancing of sermons. How do you balance your messages?
A false balance is an abomination to the Lord. How you bring balance to anything is preach the word, preach the whole counsel of the word. Don't just read one text and try to twist it to suit what you want. Messages should be within the scriptures and context.

In Christianity we need to be practical, solve problems. It's not all these my church thing, its God's church, God's people. Don't build an empire for yourself. If big ministries use ten per cent of their income to help the poor in the societies, things will be better. A lot of people in African countries know that we can do much with little.

Let us look at the lot of the black man the world over. Why are we so challenged? Someone said the blackman was cursed right from the days of Noah. Where do you stand on this?
There is the school of thought that Ham was cursed. Ham wasn't cursed, it was Canaan that was cursed. People look at it that there is this 2000 years thing. That God gave the 1st 2000 years to the black, (to Nimrod) to rule and after that, they didn't do the will of God. They said the 2nd 2000 years God gave to the Semitic race and the 3rd 2000 years making 6000 years, God gave it to the Anglosaxon. This issue is an individually thing.
If we look at things individually, one would make decision to live for God, accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour and begin to actualize the principle of Christianity in their life. 1 John 5:4 says who is he that overcome the world? He that believe Jesus Christ is the son of God. So I believe what is lacking is the principle, people embracing the principle of God and applying it to their lives. If you go to the countries of the so called white people, what you'll see is orderliness and if you deal with black people, you'll see disorderliness. We need to get our lives in order individually, the family, amenities, the state, the nation. I think the main thing is taking responsibility.
In Christianity we need to be practical, solve problems, it's not all these my church thing, its God's church, God's people, don't build an empire for yourself. If big ministries use 10% of their income to help the poor in the societies, things will be better. A lot of people in African countries know that we can do much with little.

Do you believe the church is playing the role expected of it?
Not really. There are two ways of looking at it. If I look at it from secular perspective, the bible says Christ is pre-eminent. He will always win. You can look at it that the whole world is going crazy. What is the church doing? The Church should dictate the pace but we are not. The church the world over must redefine itself. Our churches are filled with so many funny things. Look at what is happening today. It is ridiculous, but I believe God will always win.

You must have listened to sermons from other Nigerian ministers, are you satisfied with the quality of the sermons?
I think Nigeria has a lot of good preachers. The issue is Nigerian preachers are mainly preaching. From my own point of view, the issue should be teaching. I believe Nigerian preachers can motivate anybody. They are very exciting but when the excitement cools down, reality sets in. I need to relate with my mother–in–law within the ABC of the scriptures. I have to respect her and set boundaries and still maintain a good life, that is Christianity. So its not just good preaching, Nigeria needs teaching. Bible study will help a lot of people.

Your kind of preaching as seen in your videos are instructional. You are handling practical issues of life. Why are you doing this?
Because we discover that so many people do not know what to do rightly given specific problems. That is exactly what i just said. We need to teach more of the time than preach. Give instructions on how to do things. We need to humble ourselves and go back to the basics.

Lets look at the year 2009 and 2010. Have you accessed 2009 and what do you have in plan for 2010?
The Lord told us in the Church that 2009 is the year of faith. I think 2009 for us is a year of humbling ourselves before Him and I believe 2010 is a year of expectation for only those who hear from Him, and do what He asked them to do and does it will.
