As to the sin of Adam and Eve, their case is a special case in that their sin automatically brought some things into force.
Somebody wrote to me a very, very strongly worded letter, "What are you trying to tell us? God shouldn't have created the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden at all. Why did He create it, when He knew it was not a good tree? When He knew it was a tree that would bring death and all".
This is because of a shallow understanding of the Bible and the ways of God. The Bible says "He made known His ways unto Moses, His acts unto the children of Israel. May we learn to pray that God will open our understanding to understanding His ways.
Now, if you read the book of Genesis very well, it says the Tree of life was in the center of the Garden of Eden.
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was also in the center of the Garden. I believe those two trees were not far from each other. And they were central in the Garden.
Now those two trees represent something, the power to choose. This is what God has created with every man. And so central to the existence and to the life of Adam and Eve was the power to choose. That is why those trees were in the middle of the garden. But in that power to choose, their choice would make or mar the whole of human race. And as soon as they made that choice, they subjugated the authority that God had given into them unto the Devil automatically.
Now that that had happened, that would take a spiritual operation to reverse. In that spiritual operation, that was what God did in the coming and dying of Christ and in Christ's resurrection.
That spiritual operation had been done to be reverse the sin of Adam and Eve. And those of us today who are born again, we have been returned to the original estate that God planned for man and typified or modeled by the Garden of Eden. You know the Bible says the garden contains everything; everything man needed was in the Garden. Even rivers, even precious stones everything was in that garden. Now, that is what God restores us to in Christ. As long as you are born-again, you've given your life to Christ; you are restored to the original estate in which man was meant to reign and rule.
Now talking about forgiveness for them, God did. It is just that the damage had been done already. God now had to go and do something to reverse that damage. And He went about doing this and He did it in the coming of Christ. Praise God!
But you will remember that Adam and Eve went ahead and got leaves and covered themselves with leaves. And God said, look at them. "Look at them." God had to slaughter some animals and He used the animals' skins to cover them up. In the slaughtering of those animals, there must be shedding of blood. And God gave them a better covering than they gave themselves. And He said "we should now send these people out of this garden so that they would go and eat of the tree of life and thereby remain in this state irreversibly". God is wonderful. Even in that fallen state, God still really didn't want Adam and Eve to remain in that state irreversibly.
And that is why Christ could come. You see, because they were eating of the fruit of the tree of life all along. And it was giving them life. It was making them live. But the moment they partook of that other one, if they went back to the tree of life again, it would make them to remain like that irreversibly. God in his mercy and wisdom said: 'No, let us not allow them to go and partake of this anymore, so that they will not remain so irreversibly.
God is wonderful, always loving and always forgiving. And not only so, He said, 'behold now the ground is cursed for your sake.' Every thing changed because of what they did. And God is reversing everything. And a day is coming when the Lion and Cub and the kid of a Goat are going to lie side by side. That is what the bible says. But just wait, the time is coming.
