In the Old Testament, they lit lamps in the temple so that it would represent the continuous light of God, the continuous presence of God in that place.
Now those things were types and shadows. You will not find any such thing in the whole of the New Testament because Jesus is the light of the world. Not just of the temple, not just of our bodies, but in fact, the whole world. So in the New Testament, there is no such thing as lighting a candle to pray. When we do that, we are ignorant, because we are copying something from the Old Testament, which was supposed to be a shadow, a type.
Let me explain types and shadows. They are like models of what was to come. When you want to build a house or a big project, you ask the architect to do a model for you. And those models are made of cardboard and card gum and plastic and glass or so. But when the house proper has come, you do not have anything to do with that model.
Some laws govern the model, like do not pour water, do not put it in the sun, because water will spoil the cardboard, the sun will melt the card gum and such thing. But when you have built the house, pour water on the house. The house is the same and nothing will happen to it.
Now those things were models in the Old Testament and in the New, we do not have any need to pray with candles. Jesus is the light of the world, but if you think that you need to put a light inside your church to represent the light of the world, fluorescent tubes are going to be far, far better. Because the light they give is better. Or floodlights for example, they are going to be far, far better than these candles. This is my opinion.
