In a country where the human rights communities is fast diminishing and opposition from political parties compromised, Nigerians now rely on the church to speak up. But can the Nigerian church replicate what the church did in the Philipines and some South American countries? What has the Lord told the men of God about Obasanjo's third term bid? Is it politically expedient for Obasanjo to return? These are the views of some Nigerian pastors within and outside the country. |

The only person I would not want to come back to power is Babangida
"God has not told me anything about Obasanjo coming back to power or not. But as a human being, the only person I would not want to come back to power is Babangida because of his role in the annulment of the 1993 presidential election. Before Obasanjo came to power in 1999, God told me he would be re-elected in 2003.
"But I have not heard anything about him concerning 2007. The only thing God told me is that He would be waiting for them at the threshold of 2007 elections. Obasanjo, no doubt, has some sterling leadership qualities and has wonderful foreign policies, but at home, he is losing grip of leadership.
"He has recorded some achievements but there are still many areas that are unattended to. If I were Obasanjo, I would review my domestic policies and try to impress the citizens. Again, I would just go after 2007. He should show the rare maturity exhibited by Nelson Mandela of South Africa."

The Almighty God has a way of doing things the way nobody, including those positioning themselves for 2007, can predict". "It is a wasteful exercise for anybody to lay claim to or arrogate future public positions to himself in total disregard of the will and plan of God. How many people on the stage now know they will still be there in 2007? How many of the actors will witness 2007? Nobody knows tomorrow as tomorrow is in the hands of God.
"The politicians do their thing. Same applies to corrupt businessmen and the 419 people. But when we put all parameters together we begin to predict what will likely happen while leaving out one important parameter - God. The Almighty God has a way of doing things the way nobody, including those positioning themselves for 2007, can predict".

It will be the worst thing that can ever happen to this land.
"Whether it is a rumour or what ever they call it, I think, it is a bad dream. I don't think Mr. President will ever think of such a thing. I will like to believe that only politicians are trying to think out something for him because if it materializes they believe they will have extra gains to themselves.
"Mr. President should not lend his ears to them because it will be the worst thing that can ever happen to this land. It is an aberration that this country is short of leaders. Nigeria is not short of leaders, we have leaders in this country. Leaders that are committed to the cause of what we call Nigeria, not to the cause of political parties so no political leaders should come and say he alone is to lead. Before he came where were we? So let this bad dream disappear from the mind of the dreamers.

If the options are Obasanjo, Atiku and Babangida, give me Obasanjo for life.
"I will humbly beg Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
to remain in power rather than leave the power corridor and give room for the stuff of Atiku and Babangida. It will be a great crime on our part if we because of constitutional provisions allow a Babangida or Atiku to become head of state.
"Babangida, we know him. He made science of corruption in this country. He upgraded corruption into fine arts. From Babangida era, corruption now has its own technology. He brought so many pains which culminated in June 12. Yet he is unrepentant. This does not mean I have any sympathy for Abiola anyway.
"Atiku, he does not strike me as an intelligent person. He is not sound and alert enough to be a head of state. All he has is money and political clout among the thieves we call governors. I don't think he can grapple with simple economic question and I don't see him curbing corruption.
"If Obasanjo goes, its bye bye to NAFDAC woman. Its bye bye to EFCC. Its bye bye to Soludo. Its bye bye to Ngozi and so many well meaning people who have brought significant changes and re-structuring to the polity and economy. If Atiku or Babangida comes, we will begin to see new form of corruption.
"If Obasanjo will leave, let him begin to groom more credible, politically willing and sound men, the stuff of El-Rufai. (Let's forget Pentascope and Jimi Lawal) I want Obasanjo to leave. Let him go and rest. But that if we are sure that the political space is widened and the likes of Babangida and Atiku will be irrelevant.
I am so afraid of the future of my children and Nigeria under these two characters. If the options are Obasanjo, Atiku and Babangida, give me Obasanjo for life presidency. Send my ID card please.

I'm waiting for him to categorically say 'I want to run for a third term' which he hasn't said.
"One of the problems we've seen in Nigeria is that once PDP says something we just believe that it's what everyone is saying. As a Christian and as a pastor, I find it difficult to actually say Obasanjo wants to come for a third term. The reason I say so is because I'm waiting for him categorically to come and say 'I want to run for a third term' which he hasn't said. And I know that Obasanjo is a wise man. He's a man that understands Nigeria probably more than all of us. I would rather sit here today and still Say I don't believe Obasanjo has plans for a third term. Let me wait and see.
"Before you finish that, it puzzles me when I see some people who are supposed to be in jail suddenly becoming democrats. These are people who are criminals and I say it with a lot of holy anger, they should be in jail. They should not have a voice."

Nobody can mess up this country and get away with it.
"Our arguing backwards and forwards over that matter -is borne out of ignorance. You must know what the law says before you can make any meaningful contribution.
"However, let me seize this opportunity to say that this country is perfectly in God's hand and nobody, I say nobody can mess up this country and get away with it. No one can mess up this country and get away free. So, the leaders at every sphere of our life should be very careful of what they do to the collective destiny of the nation. And besides, I wonder whether people have forgotten that tomorrow is in the hand of God. So 2007 is under God's control and I don't see any tension.

I believe Obasanjo is a man of complete integrity who will not do anything immoral.
"I will rather call this topic "Obasanjo's third term issue" not "bid" because he has not said he's bidding for a third term.
"Early in 1998, during the election campaigns, the Lord spoke these words to me in my lounge at Lekki Beach Lagos "My people are too critical, they cause many to run away from me, look at Obasanjo, I have chosen him, I am the one........".
"I was given further instructions for him. I wrote these words down and took to a pastor friend. We both took the message to his Ota farm to deliver. We learnt that he had been traveling and had just returned home and was resting. We gave the letter to his personal assistant who introduced himself as BASHIRU. I hope he got the letter.
"Anyway, few days ago here in New Zealand I went to bed after praying with my family. The Lord gave me a revelation, I saw a group of Northerners all wearing turban, they were shopping for a presidential candidate. Finally they picked someone who looked like either Mukthar Shagari or Ibrahim Babangida. When I woke up I was not satisfied with the vision because I wanted to be sure. I shared this with my wife and we prayed together.
"Few days later, I had another revelation. It was the same event but now I clearly saw the face of Ibrahim Babangida as the person brought forward. The Lord began to tell me things some of which I am not ready to say now.
"However, let me explain this, no king ever reigns without the approval of heaven. Obasanjo was chosen by God and he will remain there as long as God wants him but whenever he leaves, a Northerner whose tenure will be short-lived will take over. Then a younger person from the South South will take over. It is all a divine agenda.
"Personally I would have loved to see a definite rotational process in the presidency but realistically I think Nigeria needs to be pulled out of the woods as a matter of priority even regardless of rotation AT THIS TIME.
"I believe Obasanjo is a man of complete integrity who will not do anything immoral. If the constitution is amended to allow his return, and he desires to return, I have no quarrel against that. I believe the Lord is using him to do some difficult surgical operation on Nigeria .
"Seriously I wonder who will have the guts to do what Obasanjo is doing except he whom the Lord has chosen. That country has been battered and brutalized by corrupt leaders and I sometimes think our memories are too short. We behave like children playing in the sand. They mould many houses, pulled them down and by evening none of the houses is still standing because they continue to look for something different not necessarily better.
"Remember nothing good can ever come easy. If Nigeria must become what we are all praying for it to be, there must be sacrifices. I have personally suffered in Nigeria more than anyone could imagine the effects of which still resound even as I write and I am not yet happy at the state of things.
"However, I know that God is working out something glorious for that country, what we need is prayer and patience. I saw a powerful light coming from heaven and pointing on the map of Africa . Not only Nigeria but the whole of Africa will one day say bye bye to backwardness. If it is the Lord's will for Obasanjo to stay longer, I believe He will use him to do things that will benefit Nigerians. In the past eight years, I think he has performed well and could even have done better if most of his lieutenants have had the same attitude that he has. If there have been more of joining to build up rather than tearing apart. I think the right reaction of Christians to the third term issue is "Lord, let thy will be done" This is my own attitude.

Much as continuity is desirable, we can do with another President.
* What has the Lord told you about Obasanjo?
The Lord has not told me anything about Obasanjo but he has been on my mind considering that his decision to stay back in office is a major concern to me.
* Is it politically expedient or morally ok for Obasanjo to return?
Personally, it may be politically expedient for him to remain in office but not politically good for the country's image. It is not good to have a situation where we are amending the constitution just to suit the personal agenda of one man. Clearly it is morally wrong for Obasanjo to remain in office. He has had his term and should leave.
* Will it benefit Nigerians in any way?
I am not very sure. Much as continuity is desirable, we can do with another President. Who says the next president will not be better for the country. Nobody has the monopoly of wisdom.
* How do you assess him in the last eight years?
He has tried his best and has recorded some achievements but he should leave when the ovation is loudest.
* How would you advise Christians to react to this issue?
Christians should pray for him, pray that God should take control of the situation and get politically active.

Every government would give account of their stewardship to God very soon
"Suffice it to say here that the governments since independent (1960) may not have profited the governed both locally and internationally, most especially the youths, but the word of God remain the same, they have got the rule over you and watch for your souls. They have the rule to punish your disobedience to God's word until your obedience is fulfilled and repent in dust and ashes, the condition may remain the same.
"Until we repent from idol (Festac ) to serve the living God and from all that was written in (Gal 5:19-21) and manifest the fruits of the Spirit. Many of past regimes had become one whip after the other to create an insight for our prodigal to come to consciousness that it is right time to return home. However I have got a good new for us. Nigeria has had a long period of darkness and now a glimpse of the light for change has come. After a long tunnel there must be light, if we are genuinely prepared to repent.
"God in His infinite mercy has heard the prayer of the faithfuls and the unprecedented is about to happen as the power is about to change hand. The Lord is about to send help to the less privileged, the poor and the weak as the clarion call for revival sweep all over the Nation. The Lord is prepared to use Nigerians to demonstrate His power and reflect His Glory and the Nation's departed Glory is about to return. Nigerian Eagle would fly again. Nigeria gave birth to Ichabod after the Festac Festival to idol and the Glory had since departed, but now is the time for the return of the Glory as the presence of the Lord returns to the Land that ever flows with milk and honey( 1Sam. 4 15-22.)
"Men had previously replaced the presence of God with the worship of graven image. God is ever jealous for a Nation of Nigeria that He loved and will do anything to show His grievance when we are on a wrong part. However for me to say whether we are under a wrong or right rule is absolutely judgmental but every Government would give account of their stewardship to God very soon... Heb 13:17b Knowing then that we shall give account, what kind of Government are we suppose to be?

I hope he will respect his mandate.
" He evaded the question. We cannot, however, crucify him since he has not spoken out directly on it. All they are saying for now is speculations. Somebody like me should not engage in speculations. Let us walt for his categorical yes or no.
"I know him personally, so I cannot talk on what I read on the pages of newspapers. As a Nigerian, I happened to know him and we have discussed. He has not come out to me to state that he is going for third term. let us give him the benefit of the doubt. But I believe he would not go for a third term. When we get to the river, we shall cross it. Dont let us presume. Presuption is bad. he is a well respected leader in Africa and in the world. I hope he will respect his mandate.

No amount of tricks or maneuvering can change the purpose of a God for Nigeria
"I wonder why people make so much noise about third term, or not. God has His agenda and no matter the maneuvering of man, it is nobly the agenda of God that will stand. When you are in a constituency that I am, you will know that God ways aren't like that of men. No amount of tricks or maneuvering can change the purpose of a God for Nigeria . Nigeria is so precious to God that He will not allow anybody to set us back. Hew has His divine prerogative over Nigeria and He will not allow the counsel of mere mortals alter His will for Nigeria .
"It is unfortunate that we don't look back to see God's patter for Nigeria . He will always intervene at His chosen time. We need to understand that that whatever this administration has achieved in the last six years is made possible by God because it will be share sophistry to say that President Obasanjo has not done anything or that Tinubu in Lagos or Daniel in Ogun or Agagu in Ondo has not done anything. No that will be wrong. The fight against corruption is one obvious achievement even though people say it is selective but it has to start from somewhere. Everybody can't be arrested in one day. It has to be gradual.
"So instead of wasting our energy on third term, I believe we should go to God in prayers. I also believe that since the President is a Christian and he has been silent on the issue, then he must be praying for God's guidance.
"I was privileged to be in Aso Villa recently and it was amazing that I met Mr. President fasting. I was so touched. I was touched as a clergy that I met the president fasting and praying for Nigeria . Not many of us can do that for Nigeria .

In spite of the covenant and boldness ascribed to President Olusegun Obasanjo, coming back for a third term as a civilian president may destroy the reputation he had built over the years. Therefore the warning from some quarters is that he should abandon the quest for the third time as such a trial may not augur well for him and even the nation.
According to a prophecy revealed recently by prophet M. K. Omolewa of Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun, Abesan Estate in Ipaja area of Lagos Nigeria, in his weekly Joyful Peoples Fellowship, President Obasanjo should not try to ask for a third term. Asking for this could come with God's judgment which he (Obasanjo) and even the nation would not find pleasant. It was said that God may forgive president Obasanjo if he repents of his sins and allow Nigeria to make further progress with new set of leaders.
It was further said of president Obasanjo that he had done some things that offended God in that he knew what was right but failed to do them, and the president was called upon to do the right thing before he leaves the scene or the result would be devastating if the Lord Himself could handle him by Himself, or by the hand of the prophets.

The constitution should decide, and it should not be ammended in a Kangaroo way.
"I dont want to be spiritual about this. I also like to be neutral but how can you be since this is your country? I think the constituition should be followed. If it says two-term is the maximum period, I don't see why anybody would like to go beyond that. But if the constitution is changed to allow it, since it is ammended, what can we say?
"Nevertheless, God has used Obasanjo to do so many great things but he should not decide on his own to elongate his tenure. The constitution should decide, and it should not be ammended in a Kangaroo way to satisfy him. I read an interview where he said God cannot abandon what he strated. I want him to know that governement is a continuous project. Nobody can finish it. He should forget about being all in all. Only Gad starts and ends.

Sanity is returning, we should give him more time...
"My opinion on the third term issue is that the way we play politics is so odd. Whenever there is a change of baton, the person coming in will destory all what his predecessor has done. There is not continuity. "On Obasanjo's tenure, inspite of the hardship in the land, he has taken some good steps and some radical changes have occurred. The government has restructured places like the Mint, CBN, Obasanjo has introduced young people like NAFDAC woman, etc. They are about to introduce the coins again. Do you know what havoc we are going through since coins left us? All the re-structuring have not been completed. They need time. If Obasanjo leaves, the restructuring is destroyed. The next person will throw away all the gains made. I am not a politician but if something is good, let us say it's good.
"Look at Abuja now, inspite of the demolition of house and the accompanying pains, sanity is returning to the place. People are angry that El-Rufai id destroying houses but did they do the right thing in the first place?
We are beginning to have sanity in the system for the first time since independence. In the next three, four years, I believe there will be more comfort. This is my opinion. They have their faults, but we must give them a chance.
On Babangida's coming back to power, no comment. I beg.

He should bow out when the ovation is loudest and become an elder statesman
"That idea simply means we don't have faith in ourselves. That means that Nigerians are not known to continue from where there predecessors have stopped, otherwise what is wrong in somebody initiating something and another regime starting from-where he stopped and completing what that man has initiated? It is unfortunate that a body like the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is mooting that idea.
"Is it not the same association that complains of not being able to sell their products during this regime? This goes to show that the people in MAN rooting for third term for Obasanjo are a pack of idle human beings. Chief Gani Fawehinmi described them as vagabonds in business (VIB) aptly. Maybe because they cannot manufacture new inventions, they want to try and 'manufacture' a president for 2007 even if it is against the constitution of the country.
"I think that Obasanjo has tried as a human being. He should bow out when the ovation is loudest and become an elder statesman to be called upon to counsel future leaders whenever or wherever he is needed. That will give him more honour. If he bows out honorably, God will lift up another leader for the country."

What has the Lord told you about Obasanjo?
The Lord has not really spoken to me about the President. I had however always believed that the Lord has a hand in his election and has a purpose for him at this time in the nation's history.
Is it politically expedient or morally alright for Obasanjo to return?
Given the achievements of the President in government especially during his second term particularly in the area of economic reforms, one may be tempted to agree that he should be given another chance to consolidate on the gains that have been made. But I believe that it is a failure of leadership for a leader to have failed to create an enabling environment and groom successors who are able to carry on from where he stopped. I can categorically say that if given another chance as it is being canvassed, we have a life president in our hands, because what he failed to complete within the constitutionally stipulated time, he is not likely to complete in a lifetime because governance is a continuum as new challenges arise every time. The President claims to be a Christian, I will therefore draw an analogy for him from Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ had only three years (less than a term) within which He accomplished a lot, created an enabling environment, groomed successors who are till today carrying on the work to unimaginable heights. I think it is morally unjustifiable and sheer political brinksmanship for the President to muzzle his way to another term in office.
Will it benefit Nigeria in any way?
In the event of the President being able to secure another term, it will be at very great costs which will include his integrity, credibility and focus - the needed ingredients to carry on with the programmes he so much desired to complete. A lot of time will be wasted trying to fight mounting oppositions as it is already happening and calming frayed nerves. I think it will end up being an ill wind that blows no one any good.
How do you assess him in the last eight years?
Given the situation on ground in the nation when he mounted the saddle of leadership in 1999, it is my sincere opinion that the President has really done a lot to lift the nation from the political and economic quagmire that it was prior to 1999, most especially during his second term. I score him highly.
How would you advise Christians to react to this issue?
The claim of the President to Christianity places an additional burden on the Christians in this nation to really pray for him so that his act of omission or commission may not bring the name of Christ into disrepute in this nation and beyond. In fulfillment of God's word and for the peace, progress and stability of this nation Christians ought to constantly pray not just for the president, but all who are holding the reins of office at the different levels of our national life. [I Timothy 2:1-8]. I would also want to urge Christian leaders who have the ears of the president to speak the truth to him in love and not deceive him and urge him on because of filthy lucre.
