Destiny as we use it nowadays is no longer what it used to mean. Language changes with time. In the days of the bible "suffer little children" meant "allow little children". You know what it means today. "Piss off" years back, meant "to cast away with disdain". Today, even a person says of himself, "I was pissed off", meaning he was put off. So, you see, language changes with time.
The word DESTINY used to mean something that must happen, no matter how. Nowadays, it means "God's dream for you". God's dream for you is something you may or may not achieve. It is all in your hands.
Destiny as some cultures and religions see it, simply cannot be. The bible has no place for it. Why do we need to witness to people? They will get saved anyway if they are destined to. Is that correct? Why do you need to discipline or train your children? They will, no matter what, become good citizens if they are destined to. Is that true? Whether I am lazy or I work hard, I will end up as destined. True? This bad belief has kept many people poor and uneducated. You know, they do not aspire-they think, "what will be will be. Lie of the devil. The bible has no place for it at all.
I guess what has been causing confusion is that God's attribute of
FORE-KNOWLEDGE makes people feel that He, God has pre-arranged that
someone's life should be somehow. I remember one caller quoting scriptures like "God, who separated me from my mother's womb", "Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee and ordained thee a prophet...", etc. All those things simply described God's dream for the people concerned. They could have chosen to turn their back upon God--like many many in the world today.
Again, examine the one in Jeremiah. Does it suggest that God created
Jeremiah much much later (i.e. after His rest on the seventh day)? No. He had finished His works long before Jeremiah's parents conceived him.
But Jeremiah's generation needed someone like him and God, because He is foreknowing, realized that old Jerry would be the best candidate for the job.
Now, imagine this. Supposing I have this attribute of foreknowledge. And in the year 1940, I knew there would be an OKOCHA playing football greatly. In 1999, I can easily say, "I knew you even before you were born"! If I also happened to be the creator, I can say more. "I knew you while you were yet in the womb and gave you dribbling instincts". Now the truth about the matter is that God had finished His work before the seventh day. He did not give Okocha dribbling instincts only while in the womb; He gave him sometime
before the seventh day!!
The Lord simply speaks in the language the people He is addressing will understand.
