Dr. Francis Bola-Akin John, a Doctir of Philosophy holder in Christian education says many married men are secretly battling with lust, or striong sexual desire, although hey mate hate to admit it. he explains that lust is no respecter of sex, because it can operate in the life of any man or woman. He speaks on the consequences of lust in marriage and how it can be cured. Excerpts. |

What is lust?
Lust is excessive desire and longing for sex, either in the male or in the female. Sex is natural and was created by God, but when it becomes so excessive that a person is being controlled by it, it then becomes lust.
When a man has a spirit of lust in his heart, he could look for anybody to sleep with. It could be his maid, his wife's best friend or just anybody. And he won't mind, provided his desires are met. In this case, he is being ruled by his sexual libido.
 |
At what age do you think some tell-tale signs of lust could be noticed in a man or woman?
Usually, lust could be noticeable from age 11. You see, God created both male and female with sexual passions or desires. But, when lust sets in, a child from 11 years can start exhibiting it by watching Pornographic films, watching naked women, using dolls as sexual aid. If it is not cured, it could get to a stage whereby such a person may want to satisfy his |
sexual desire, with just anybody available. Such a person won't mind sleeping with his wife's friends, his wife's sisters, cousins, or even his housemaid.
Can lust affect marriage? If yes, how?
Oh yes, in several ways. There are people who go into marriage not because they believe in the sanctity of marriage but they go into marriage just to satisfy their lustful desires. And when you marry as a result of lust, either the man or the woman, you can never satisfy each other. That is what leads to keeping flings outside matrimony. For example, a lady who has slept with various sizes of men" before she got married might be possessive of lust.
Why do you think so?
She can't be satisfied! Those who had slept with her before she got married are the types that could go four or five rounds of sex with her. And when such a lady is married to a man that is so busy with office work, a man who comes back home late at night tired or fagged out, problem ensues; and maybe such a workaholic could only go one round with her, she will never be satisfied. And because lust is there, she will go out.
But, this is more pronounced in men than women, why?
Yes, lust works so much in men. It is more pronounced in men than in women. A man that has gone round and has seen various shapes and sizes of women, may find it difficult to sleep with his wife alone. He finds it more difficult if he is the type that takes alcohol or some stimulants that stimulate his sexual power, and when his wife comes, the poor woman will not satisfy him. Maybe, .the woman is alright with one or two rounds and she is tired, but that could be the time the man has just woken up. Of course, when .that happens repeatedly; he will go out or he could be doing it right in the home by sleeping with his maid when madam is deeply asleep or even his mother-in-law! His office is not ruled out. His secretaries are not ruled out. Ladies he picks on the road are targets too.
Mother-in-law?
Yes, there are some men who sleep with their mothers-in-law! That is the outcome of lust. And when lust is operating in a marriage, there will be no trust. And when there is no trust in marriage, there is no relationship. And if such a man should demand for sex from his wife and she complains slight headache, he can rape his wife. Or don't you know some men do?
Is that possible?
Yes, some men under this in kind of excessive sexual pressure do rape their wives. There are some men who do that.
If one of the spouses is under the influence of lust, what do you think will happen to such a marriage?
If care is not taken, the marriage will eventually crash. It is not a crime for fire to be in a fireplace, remember? You know in the Western homes during winter, they have a place they call the fire place, they put logs of wood there. So, it is not a crime to have fire in a fire place, but it is a crime for you to allow fire to burn down the house.
What do you mean by this?
What I mean is that it is not a crime as a man or as a woman to have sexual desires, it is natural and it is created by God for couples who are married. But, it is wrong for a man to be controlled by his sexual desires. There are some men who are not disciplined at all when they begin to have this urge I'm talking about. And when lust is noticed in a marriage, such a marriage is bound to crash. I know cases of women that opted out of their marriage because their men can go the whole day and the whole night in sexual sessions. That is lust operating in full swing.
What do you think can cause this?
Men who are addicted to reading pornography or watching pornographic films are mostly victims of lust because I what they read and watch stimulate them. Alcoholism, addiction to hard drugs and all sorts of stimulants can cause lust in the life of a man. And if a man is addicted to any of the above, it shouldn't surprise his wife to discover anytime that her man has impregnated her kid sister. A man once confessed that he sneaked to his wife's chief bridesmaid on his wedding night after finishing with his wife.
 |
Yes, this is because lust is operating in him. He is being controlled by his manhood. It is like a baby crying for breast milk. He can't deny himself of sex once the strong urge comes. Once he has pressure, he must go, and whoever he does it with doesn't matter to him. He can finish and start apologising that it was the work of the devil! |
How do you know men who are victims of this strong sexual desire so that their wives will know when to start ‘interceding' for their husbands in prayers? This is a good question. You recognise such men from some things they do unknowingly. For instance, if you suddenly see your husband peeping at your grownup sisters, cousins, your housemaid through the door knob of the bathroom when they are taking their baths, you don't need to be reminded to start praying for him. . .
Are there some other tell-tale signs?
Yes! A man that has lust in him will always look at beautiful women mainly at their chests (their boobs) and their backsides (butts). Little wonder the Holy Book says that when a man looks at a woman lustfully, that he has committed sin. This is because, by the time a man begins to look at a woman at those parts I mentioned, he is imagining what those areas will look like in his heart. This is the time the wife should commit him to God through prayers.
How will a lady know if her fiancé is battling with lust?
If you have noticed that your man is the type that is always closing his office door to fumble with his secretaries, irrespective of their marital status and you have seen him do this many times, then know it that your fiancé is a victim of lust. Advise him respectfully to go for prayers or church deliverance. If he refuses, it is now left for you to decide whether to marry him or not. But don't blame anybody if he turns out worse in the nearest future after the marriage.
What is your advice for such a lady?
My advice for such a lady is to quit, else she will cry her eyes out in the nearest future.
