The Challenge of Inadequate Resources
The church in Nigeria is being sensitized to release her best fifty thousand youths in the next fifteen years, to take the gospel back to Jerusalem . This is known as "Vision 5015". The vision is spreading and gradually gaining momentum.
The question that comes to mind as we reflect on the Training Schools in Nigeria , is how equipped are these schools? We think of manpower, money and materials needed. The schools need more qualified and experienced manpower. They could be seconded, employed or volunteer for short or long term. The schools need regular flow of money for administrative operations, materials such as books, training equipment and computers.
A lot have been done in NEMI, but we need the support of the body of Christ to reposition NEMI to achieve her vision.
The Challenge of Insecurity
In recent times, Nigerians have been affected by the activities of armed robbers. They rob in high ways, banks, market places, churches, hospitals, homes, offices and schools.
NEMI was not left out. Three times they have visited the Institute. The last was on the early hours of 22"" August 2006. They took away goods worth N500, 000.00. God in His sovereignty has intervened to turn the robbery incident to lift up the school and make it safer.
There is no safe place on earth except in Christ Jesus. You need however, to be security conscious but do not be frightened and scared by the news of their nefarious activities. Pray, plan and protect yourself, your Institute or organization against their sudden evasion.
The Challenge of Living in a Community
NEMI is a training ground. Every behaviour and action counts. In NEMI, Staff and students are encouraged to interact and share. In this process, members of the community get to know each other, learn and grow. A student said "I have never lived in a community like this in all my life. In a place like this, you are either the offender, or the offended."
Halley observed in his book; "living in a community brings its own pressures, and Christians are surprised and sometimes disappointed to discover that living with a group of Christian is not as wonderful as they had hoped."
Community life is very essential for missionary Training. Are you considering a place for training? Come to NEMI and share your life in such a learning environment.
The Challenge of Higher Missiological Education
Many trainers and heads of schools of Missions are so saddled with responsibilities that they hardly think of time to engage in higher studies. Some ~o not see the need, and feel they have no extra time needed for such studies. Sometimes it is so difficult to break the regular routine for former studies or even take refresher courses. To others, they consider the place and cost of undertaking such study.
Considering the importance of continuing education, Monroe Brewer listed the following as benefits; Intellectual stimulation, broadening of perspective, solution to problems in ministry, immediate applicability of information, a growing network of likeminded professionals, academic credit, the attainment of realistic goals and the thrill bf satisfaction of directing one's own learning part.
NEMI has introduced the Training of Trainers (TOT) programme designed to Equip and provide refresher courses to Trainers / serving Missionaries. You can earn credit for Diploma, BA and MA courses or simply take courses for personal refreshment. There are three contact sessions yearly. You need to study to stay current on missiological trends across the globe, anyone who stops learning starts dying.
The Challenge of Raising Support.
Staff and students in several schools of Missions struggle to raise their support. It is becoming more difficult these days for some churches to support projects and staff that are not directly working with them. However, there are those who give, but prefer to give to Missionaries in the field since that is where the action is taking place. This has affected the Training Movement; but you can reverse it by supporting missionary staff and giving scholarship to missionaries in training.
Let us join hands with Trainers and students, in schools of Missions to make their service and training joyful. |
