Amina Hassan comes from the only Arab tribe in Nigeria. Dayo Emmanuel captures her missionary effort in the area.

For Amina Hassan the mission field is a place believers should experience in the course of their walk with God. Though the reality of the modern day does not make it practicable for all believers to be involved, she said, those who are passionate about souls could be involved indirectly. “Those who cannot go to the field can pray for missionaries, give their resources and pay visits to missionaries on the field.

Amina, who just returned from a mission trip to the eastern part of northern Nigeria, noted that the challenges on the mission fields are real. “Those on the field are in great need, things are difficult for some of them. They need all the support those who can’t go can give.

A graduate of Mass Communication from the Ahmadu Bello University, Hassan said the gospel has gone beyond preaching the word of God alone. “There is the need for us to meet the physical need of the people and to demonstrate God’s love. That is where churches must come in to help.”
She relayed the story of a missionary who came to a church to source for funds but was only given N500 by a widow. “This is the tragedy of the church today,” she said, Adding, “These days a lot of Christians are only minding their own businesses and neglecting the masters business. Today we talk about mega churches and all sorts of things but we pay little emphasis on mission.”
Recalling her experience in the North, she said, “I must thank God for the effort of the Fountain of Life Church in the Northern part of the country. The church was able to build a hospital in the part of the country where I served as a missionary and the hospital has really been of help to the villagers.”

Amina who just completed her master’s programme at the West Africa Theological Seminary, (WATS), Lagos said the late wife of Richard Mofe Damijo, Mee, had a great influence on her life. “The woman encouraged me by her commitment to the writing profession. That is why I picked interest in writing.”

Beyond writing, mission work seem to be her only love and working among her people in the North is something she would always love to do. “I come from a tribe called the Shuwa Arab. They are the only Arab speaking people in Nigeria. In the tribe, there is no record of Christianity. After my conversion, I read a book in the library where it was indicated that there was no Christian in that community. So that was what encouraged me to go there and preach the gospel. “For me it is coming out of darkness and going back to bring those there out. The only challenge is that I can only minister to the women and not the men because women are not allowed by tradition to address or instruct men in the community. This is a major limitation for now.”

For now, the bulk of the work she does is to offer counseling to the women and girls. She said, “God has helped me to be a role model to the girls and we have been able to influence them through the help of the Holy Spirit to say NO to premature marriage which is prevalent in the community.”
