The same way they told us the Pygmies, Zulus and the Bantus were 40 years ago while I was in secondary school, they are still like that
Evangelist Yinka Ipaye, President of Tent Makers International Ministries, has been to over 40 countries of the world covering five continents of the world. In this encounter with some journalists, he recounts his experience in some communities where people live with wild animals, his sojourn to and familiarity with the pygmies in three African countries, his rapport with Pastor Gariel Oduyemi (now late) and the relevance of evangelism and mission in the 21st century. Perhaps the greatest revelation in the interview is that the same way he was told the Pygmies, Zulus and the Bantus were 40 years ago while he was in secondary school, they are still like that.

My mission
God asked me to go round the world and preach the gospel. This is in line with Mark 15 16-18. The Lord asked me to go all the nations of the world preaching the gospel and delivering people from the shackles of the devil through the power of the Holy Spirit.

I started the ministry about 10years ago. I was with late Gabriel Oduyemi. I traveled with him to more than 20 countries. But I had to answer the call of God in my life in 1997 when God gave me this vision to start my ministry.

The ministry is named after Paul, the great apostle. He was the first tent maker in the bible. I told God I wanted to work with Him, but I said I did not want to live on tithes and offering. The reason I had to say that was because I'm a professional surveyor and I was doing well in my profession.

Most of my friends who were unbelievers at that time, if they hear I had gone into the ministry, they would probably think I was looking for money. And I did not want that. That was why I chose to be a tent maker. Since I left, the Lord has been meeting my needs.

This ministry is peculiar because I don't collect tithe and offering from anybody but if you force me to take donations I will have to take it so that you may be blessed.

Secondly, God said wherever they gave their lives to Christ, I should give them bibles because that is the best gift you can give anybody. In 2004 I was in 16 countries. In 2005, I was in 18 countries. In 2006 I was in 20 countries. In 2007, I have visited a number of countries and I hope to visit more countries before the year runs out. I have already sent budget for the Central African Republic . I love to go to the oppressed areas. I was in Central Africa Republic and I was with the pygmies.

I studied Africa history when I was in secondary school about 40 years ago. The same way they told us the pygmies were, they are still like that. The Zulus and the Bantus are still like that. Before I started ministry in that area, the Lord asked me to change their names. I was in Manipur in India , that is about 300 miles after Calcutta where people are terribly poor and neglected.

The reason I go to the poor area is because I come from a humble background. I lost my both parents when I was six months old. And for God to have taken me to this status, I believe whatever I have belong to Him. Many pastors don't want to go where I go because they don't give money in those places rather, you have to give. I had to make borehole for the pygmies because the water they drink is green and undrinkable. If God send you on any trip, He will provide for you.

In my early ministry, three days to 9/11 in 2001, I preached in Europe and I preached about the end time. I said America is the Sodom and Gomorrah of our time because of three things. In America men marry men and women marry women.

In February that year, there was a church in California, 450 burnt themselves to death. I said America accommodates a church of Satan in which Bill Gate is a member. I said for these three things, America is Sodom and Gomorrah of our time. And I told them to be prepared. I went to sleep.

Before I started that message, opposite the church there was a club and they had all the instruments, but the church where I preached didn't have any of those instruments. I got a list of instruments and promised I would get the instruments for them. Nothing happened for about two months after I came back from the trip, I was looking for money to buy the instruments for the church. And God did it miraculously.

In November, people were now chasing me for a land I could not get a buyer for. And I was able to sell the land for N10 million.

By the middle of November, I got the cheque that was how I got all money to buy the instrument for the Congolese. I went to the Congolese Ambassador and told him that I had bought some instruments for his people and I would not pay to export the instruments. He invited me for launch. As I got to his house he introduced me to a man who was the General Manager of their airline. That was how I was able to send those instruments to Congo .

I wanted to commit suicide
I used to be in an orthodox church. I was a practicing one. I was a real socialite. At the age of 30 I have had about three different titles. Being in the Orthodox Church, I never missed church even when I went to party a night before. But Jesus arrested me in 1991.

Evangelist Yinka Ipaye

Before I was arrested by Jesus, I was terrible in my days. We could number the Quantity Surveyor in Nigeria . Money was not a problem. But I got to a point where I was penniless. Almost about N25m went into air. That was when my eyes got opened and I realized that there was somebody that was greater than all our problems.

I wanted to commit suicide. But Jesus came right into my life. I wished I could have been a Christian earlier. I never knew it is so sweet with the Lord. When I was in the world, I usually open my purse for Sunny Ade during parties. That tells you how rich I was. Most of my friends don't believe what has happened to me.

The Bantus and the Zulus
The Bantus and the Zulus really humbled me. When you get to the town, you have to go another 50 miles on jeep. I was in canoe for 4 and half hours. I encountered crocodiles, hippopotamus and elephants. God made us the head of all animals including the wild ones. Once you don't attack them, they go on their way. I spent two solid weeks in the bush. The animals were scattered in the bush. And I was in the bush with the animals and the people.

My first night, I started praying from about 12 midnight till 5am. When I slept briefly, I saw this black cat and I was grieved in the spirit and I shouted fire of God and the thing ran away. They wanted to intimidate me, but the fire of God consumed them. I did not sleep for two weeks. You cannot afford to sleep in your enemy's territory.

Immediately, I entered the town, a woman brought a dead child to me and God asked me to breath on the child and the child sneezed thereafter and came back to life. That was in Central Africa Republic .

In Nigeria , there is a place between Ogun State and Lagos State where they still do trade by barter. I went there with Indomie, rice and a lot of things. Even those in the mosque ran to meet us.

Why I'm sold to evangelism
What happened was that immediately I started with Oduyemi, I faced a spiritual problem which brought me closer to God. If I had failed, I would have been back in the world, but when I overcame the problem I moved higher. I was just three months old in the Lord and I went to give my testimony in the church and there was this lady who also gave her testimony. After the church service, Gabriel Oduyemi just called both of us and pronounced us husband and wife.

Within a month, marriage was arranged. I wanted to run away because the lady in question was not my taste. I called my cousin who had been born again for years and asked him if that is how born again people do. Because I like slim ladies and this woman was not. For two weeks they didn't see me in church. Eventually we were forced to marry and it didn't last more than six months.

The lady, I guess was desperate. She was possessed. I never dreamt of going to bible school. But when she was with me, going back home was like going to hell. That was how I went to bible school. I was using a brand new Toyota car; she went and destroyed the car. I then drove to the pastor who joined us and we separated. The lady had gone back to the world. She was even smoking and drinking. She made me strong in the Lord because I had to be praying and fasting virtually every night. I have never regretted meeting her because God used her to prepare me for the deliverance ministry. There are times when God does some things we don't understand.

Pastor Gabriel Oduyemi
Initially it changed my impression about Pastor Oduyemi but later I had to forgive because I later realized that God used him to strengthen my faith. I traveled to more than 20 countries with him and I can tell you that he has great anointing upon his life when preaching outside. I think he would have been much more effective if he was an evangelist. When I was with him, I told him and many pastors also told him that he should concentrate on evangelism rather than pastoring a church.

Mission needs
The pygmies need a lot: Classrooms, boreholes, teachers and a whole lot of things. Nigerian churches do not have what it takes to spearhead missions. It takes a lot of perseverance and a lot of patience. During my visit to Yongi Cho's church in South Korea , there is a place where they pray and you can be there for a whole year praying. You just pray and come down to eat. As an evangelist you must have to make do with whatever you meet in places you go. For two weeks in Congo I could not use new blade to shave because my body had become something else.

If you are not empowered spiritually, you could be carried out dead in those countries. What we do on the field is that we take possession of the strong man in any country we go. Every country has a strongman. You have to take the strongman and bind him.

There was a time in Kinshasa , 2004 we finished about 10.30 in the night. And I found out that the owner of the church was possessed. By 12 midnight I wanted to take my bath to start praying. In the bath I was dumbfounded. I was oppressed. I started praying and communicating in the Holy Spirit. The next day I went to the woman and I told her never to try what she did the previous night.
