I know that you passionately want to live a better life. You want to live an Arcadian life. You want to make millions and billions of naira. You want to meet your basic needs: Food, clothing, and shelter. You want to win friends and influence people. You want to be a star. You want to build your own house and have your own car, but where is the job?

Unemployment has eaten deep into the fabrics of the society. It has made a lot of people look older than their age. It is not an exclusive commodity to people from a particular geographical region. It fears no one, and respects none. It has cast a lot of people broken and wounded.

Many Nigerians are unemployed. One research revealed that only about three million people, out of the estimated 22millions in the school system enter the labour market annually. Another research revealed that the labour market can hardly absorb 10 percent of the entire school output. You now have two options: You either start your own business, or develop yourself for paid employment. For the purpose of this article, we will look at how you can build yourself for the job market. This is because many companies are now established, and they need you. I mean YOU. You need to read this article for yourself, your unemployed friends, and relatives.

Before I teach you how to get employed in less than three months, I want you to ask yourself these questions; who am I? What can I do? And where am I going?

WHO AM I?
This is a question of your personality. Who am I? What is my personality? Personality s a phenomenon can be defined as the totality of an individual‘s behavioral and emotional tendencies. Who am I? I want you to run a quick, mini personality check.

We have four basic personality types. They are the

Dominant Director
Influencing Relater
Steady Supporter
Complaint Nurturer

Your personality affects you in a lot of ways. It can determine the kind of job that can bring you joy. I believe you are looking for a job that bring you fulfillment in every aspect, so pay attention to your personality. Let’s do a simple SWOT analysis on the four basic personality types.

Dominant controllers

They are usually first borns, first boys, or first girls. They like to be in control. They love to do things in their own way. If you are looking for them, look out for someone with boldness, and a controlling spirit. They are usually tall, strong, and muscular.
They are straight forward.

Strength
They are strong willed

Weakness
They are workaholics

Opportunity/Career Path
They are Entrepreneurs in almost any field. They can be lawyers, architects, etc.

Influencing Relaters

They are usually last borns. They have a lot of social needs. They can talk about anything at anytime, in any situation. They are usually plump, fat, and soft. They are cheerful, and desire acceptance by others.

Strength
They are good communicators

Weakness
They are usually unorganized.

Career Path
People oriented jobs. They can be nurses, comedians, etc

Steady Supporters

They are usually middle borns. They just want everybody to get along. They like to do things the easy way. They are good at listening to people. They are slim and frail, and are found to have a restrained personality. They have the willingness to learn and pursue academic excellence.

Strength
They are loyal and reliable.

Weakness
They are slow and sluggish

Opportunity/Career Path
They are team players, employees, and counselors.

Complaint Nurturers
They are mainly only borns, only girls, or only boys.
They are always thinking about how something should be done. They enjoy deep thinking, they demand space and silence, and are moody. They are skilled at setting long range goals. They are perfectionists. The only exceptions are only borns, who have been over pampered by their parent. These only borns have characteristics of the influencing relaters.
Strength
They can solve problems through their critical thinking skills.

Weakness
They plan so much that they fail to act.

Opportunity/Career Path
Jobs that demands exactness. They can be aeronautic engineers, neurosurgeons, etc

You might have a combination of these personality types. That is what makes you unique from the other person out there. Your personality has been shaped by the following

Biological inheritance
Physical environment
Culture
Unique experiences
Reference group, friends, and associations Parents

If you don’t want to be frustrated, take time out to know who you are. Know your makeup. If you know who you are, you can go anywhere you want to go. After knowing your personality, then you need to ask yourself this question: What can I do?

WHAT CAN I DO?
Before you consider working for an organization, you need to know what you can do. This is a function of your talents. As a counseling psychologist, I’ve had clients who are earning lump sum of money, but are not fulfilled. Why? There is something in them that is seeking for an expression

What can I do? To know what you can do, check out your talents. When you discover your talent, nobody will be able to keep you silent. There is something in your nothing. Somebody needs what you have. Austin J.J.
Okocha discovered his talent; and became an icon in football. Tu Face Idhibia discovered himself, and became an icon in music. Omowole Agbolade discovered himself, and became an icon in counseling psychology. Discover yourself.

You can only climb the ladder of your destiny through personal inventory. You are too close to let your story hinder you from stepping into your destiny. What can I do? What are my talents? Isaac Durojaiye, MD/CEO of DMT mobile toilet counseled “everybody can fill in the gap somewhere”. I have discovered that an average Nigerian does not know who he or she is. I want you to run a mini personal inventory

Personal Inventory

In what have I done well so far in life?
What m I know for?
What do I enjoy doing naturally?
What problem infuriates me the most?
What do I do effortlessly that others consider being hard?
What brings me joy and happiness?

The reason you have to run the personal inventory is
this: Companies are looking for individuals who will solve problems for them. They are not looking for people who will be problems to them. They will pay you salary because of your potentials, not your credentials. Who am I?

WHERE AM I GOING?
Vision is the visualization of your dreams. Vision has to do with sight. E.g, Television. In a simple language, vision is the process of laying and shaping the structure of your future. It is the art of carving a place for “you” in the future.

I want you imagine the kind of life you want to live.
Visualize yourself working for the company you want to work for. Don’t see a screen or a picture in your mind. Put yourself into your imagination.

See yourself driving your dream car, with your dream spouse, to your dream house. Visualize the picture of a perfect life, where you have all the money you need.
How do you feel?

Imagine the coolness of your dream office. How cool is it? Imagine the voice of your secretary? Imagine eating your best meal in the company’s canteen?
Perceive the odour of your dream flower garden, how does it smell?

These are more than a mental exercise, they are a magnetic attraction. WYSIWYG, What You See Is What You Get. If you can see it in your mind, you can attract it to your life. What you don’t see, you can’t seize.
It is what you will, and feel, that you can get.
Vision is an attractive force that draws you to your future, a step at a time.

Every morning, visualize writing an application letter, and working at your dream job. Don’t just visualize, act. Action is the blood of vision. It transforms vision into realization.

In the next edition of the Unique International Magazine, I will show you how to know the job market, and where to begin your search. You will learn so much from it.
