Husband goes to court on paternity
... tells Bishop to swear with Bible in Church
... villagers embark on protest against Bishop

Bishop Margaret Wanjiru's former husband yesterday threatened to go to court to stop her wedding South African fiancee Samuel Matjeke until the paternity of her two sons is determined.

If Bishop Wanjiru insisted she was not his common-law wife, then the court should determine who the biological father of her sons Steven Ndimu and Evans Kariuki was, said Mr James Kamangu, a cobbler and potter, from Gachie Kiambu.

Swear in Church
"I am surprised now Wanjiru is saying I should go and hang myself and she will do a funeral. But before I do that and she performs the ceremony, she should tell the world who is the biological father of her sons. Let her swear with the Bible and in Church that I am not their father and her common-law husband," he said at his home.

And Bishop Wanjiru's former village mates demonstrated chanting: "Yote yawezekana bila Wanjiru. Ashindwe! (Everything is possible without Wanjiru. Let the devil be defeated!)

The villagers challenged the founder of Jesus is Alive Ministries to tell the world that she was not married to the cook-turned cobbler and potter.

Bishop Wanjiru's former neighbours at Gachie as well as people who claimed to be her relatives by customary marriage, told Nation that they knew she was Mr Kamangu's wife.

"Not once but many times did she run to my home and seek refuge after she was beaten by Kamangu,'' said Mrs Nelly Wainaina a retired Telkom employee.

Mama Peris Wangui, a 70-something year old, recalled how Bishop Wanjiru used to buy foodstuff at her Jakai Shop, now closed.

Mrs Damaris Waithiru said she had been Wanjiru's neighbour and friend for the she lived together with Mr Kamangu between 1978 and 1983.

Mr Evans Kago, 54, said when Mr Kamangu was a cook in Westlands, Nairobi, "Wanjiru was in school but she used to live with Kamangu. They then married and came here (Gachie)."

Mr Kamangu's younger sister Jane Nyanjega said: "She (Bishop Wanjiru) should accept she is still my brother's wife and Kamangu is the biological father of her sons."

"I am shocked"
Mr Harrison Mungai Ndungi, 39, said; "I am shocked. Why can't Wanjiru accept the reality?... she is Mr Kamangu's common-law wife.

Mrs Stephen Karori, 45, said she was Mr Kamangu's neighbour when he married her.

"I can tell you for a fact, this is not the first time Wanjiru is denying her husband."
