Teach your child about Salvation
-
Linda Porter Carlyle and Aileen Andres Sox |
| The following points are the ones your child needs to understand in order to accept Jesus' salvation (rescue) for herself. |
 |
God loves us. He created us. We are very special to Him. Talk with your child about the ways in which he is unique and about how much God loves those special things about him. Help your child feel God's delight and approval by showing him your delight and approval.
- Sin is ugly and hurts. It separates us from God. It makes us sad. Everyone has sinned, even little children (although their sins are the relatively innocent ones of childhood). Ask your child about specific sins she sees that have made her sad. Talk to her about the times she has sinned and how those sins made her feel.
- Because everyone is sinful, everyone in the world needs to be rescued. No one can rescue himself any more than Stuff the dog could rescue herself. God sent Jesus to earth to rescue us. To rescue us, He had to die.
- When we see that we have sinned and need to be rescued, we can ask Jesus to be our Savior and to forgive our sins. That is a prayer Jesus always answers Yes! (Forgiveness is discussed more fully in Teach Your Child About Forgiveness .)
- When we have accepted Jesus, He saves us and a new life begins in us. We are now part of His family. As part of our new life we will pray, say we are sorry when we do something wrong, learn about Jesus from the Bible, and tell others about Him. God will give us the power to do all these things.
- Share these wonderful truths with your child day by day. Pray for wisdom and listen to the Holy Spirit, because at some point, while you are sharing God's gift of salvation with your child, your child will want to accept Jesus for herself. Ask her, "Do you want to accept Jesus as your Savior?" If your child says Yes , pray with her. Briefly tell God about your love for your child and how happy you are that she wants to become a part of God's family and accept Jesus. Then give your child the opportunity to confess her sins and ask Jesus to be her Savior and make her part of His family. Encourage your child to share the news of her conversation with others as the occasion arises.
- Help your child see that by accepting Jesus he has gained a new status in the eyes of heaven. He is a child of God and will live forever!
