"While our problem lasted, my husband was called all sorts of unprintable names. He was called ‘woman wrapper' for his loyalty to our bond of marriage. He refused to keep any mistress or accept getting married to any other woman. One day, my hubby made a promise to me. He said: ‘Esi, no matter the odds, you are my wife and you will remain my only wife.' He gave me all the support and encouragement I needed, and I adore him for who he is.
"Having vowed not to go to any herbalist, I had my focus on God the Almighty. I joined Deeper Life Gospel Church to enhance my prayer life and that gave me the opportunity to meet Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, the general overseer. And after listening to my case, the man of God prayed for me and I conceived thereafter. This was after the eighth year of our marriage. I carried the pregnancy for nine months, but lost the baby at birth as stillborn."
When this happened, Okaraga wept bitterly and refused to be consoled. Thereafter, her husband forced her to resign from her job, thinking that they lost the baby because of stress. "At this point in my life, I discovered that the only thing that was giving me joy was evangelism, going out to share the gospel with people. So, I took joy in preaching to congregations, in buses and any occasion that came my way. While doing this, I took in the second time, but again, I had another miscarriage."
While in her devastated state, Okaraga met Pastor Kumuyi again after about two years and he prayed for her once more, this time breaking whatever bondage that had held sway in her life.
By the time she had the second meeting with Kumuyi, her husband had gone back to Egypt and she went to join him again. "I conceived in Egypt and we had our first baby – Alex - there. That was after 11 years of barrenness. Today, we have four beautiful children, three boys and a girl."
When the news of the birth of the baby got to Nigeria , some people did not believe the miracle. "Some wanted to see both the mother and child, and not just ordinary photographs before they could believe that I really conceived and had my baby. The tone of my in-laws changed and some of my husband's so-called friends, who wanted him to go for other women, ‘to prove that he is a man,' swallowed their words."
Today, she now uses her experiences to bless other couples. "For instance, an American lady conceived six months after I had preached Christ to her in Egypt ; that was after her six years of barrenness. And since I came back to Nigeria , the Lord has used me to minister fruitfulness into the lives of many women in different churches."
Interestingly, her mother inspired her into music. "I took after my mother, she was a good singer and while I was in Germany , I was in the church choir. But in spite of the inspirational songs that come to me, I never thought of waxing an album."
However, Okaraga realised that she kept composing and compiling songs. "Towards the end of last year (2005), I discovered that I was finding it difficult to concentrate on whatsoever I was doing. Instead, I would rather prefer singing always. When singing was like becoming a distraction to me, I prayed to God to help me out and to direct me better."
At the very beginning of this year, she met a young relation, Evangelist John Mammam, who is an actor and also into Christian film production. "I shared my musical experience with him and Mammam did not just encourage me. He promised to push my musical inspiration and talent to fruition. And today, I have Abanaba with its nine tracks as my first album."
