A habit is a practise, behaviourial pattern, routine, tendency, habitual action, fixed practise or confirmed way of doing things. Habits can be servants, tools, helpers or they can be rots that take us toward oblivion. Habits can be good or bad. It is incumbent upon pastors to cultivate habits that enhance ministry and character. Let's just take a look at the following bits of advice on habits accumulated from long years of ministry and from many sources.

1. Start everyday With God: Bible reading, prayer, meditation.

2. Make a plan for each day: Set some immediate daily goals, short range goals and long range plans. Plan your work and work your plan.

3. Keep priorities in mind: God, yourself, your family and ministry.

4. Cultivate a habit of being punctual.

5. Determine to be a living example of what you preach.

6. Live within your means, pay your bills on time - set aside a little for rainy day

7. Set aside time everyday for family needs. Plan special times with your spouse and children away from the demands of day-to-day ministry. Cultivate a good family life.

8. Never step into pulpit unprepared - physically, mentally, spiritually and psychologically. Keep yourself fit in all these areas.

9. Do a brave thing - Physical exercise are essential to your physically health.

10. Become a student of the word, of good literature and of people

11. Cultivate a positive mental attitude. Don't allow yourself to become angry, defensive, defeated, caustic or negative

12. Be a peacemaker, not troublemaker. Short tempers do not make for long ministries. A controversialist will make a bad pastor.

13. Who you are shouts louder than what you say every time. Your life is your ministry. Be plain, consistent, dependable, a person to be trusted and count ort. Be a person of integrity and honesty.

14. Read, read and read more. Read a book a month and subscribe to periodicals

15. Build your library diligently.

16. Keep a functional office. Your office is your growing, groaning and glowing room.

17. Learn to say nice and positive things. Never speak ill of anybody publicly.

18. Deliver on your promises or don't make foolish promises. Have no secret dealings with anybody.

19. Be an enthusiastic, positive and flexible person

20. Never counsel anybody of the opposite sex alone or behind closer doors. Converse sparingly with women in private. It is foolish to think you shall not be tempted in such situations.

21. Take a day off each week; take your annual vacation

22. Be a tither and giver of offerings; be generous with everything you have.

23. Be loyal to your Church, your church board, your family, your God and your denomination. If you can't be loyal, get out. Do something else.

24. Don't be a plagiarist. .If you use other people's materials give them credit. Don't be a taker only, put something back into the pipeline of ideas and concepts for others to use too

25. Don't allow others to take your decisions for you. Be decisive. Stop procrastinating.

26. Develop a good relational skill with people. Your mood and disposition will affect Your ministry.

27. Be accountable to a good and matured mentor. Be willing to be under authority and discipline.

28. Be a good neighbour. Be approachable by everybody, even little people. Treat everybody alike, from CEO to little children.

29. Don't become known as a long winded preacher. Stand. up, speak up and shut up.

30. Cultivate a sense of humor. A preacher without a sense of humor is like a cat without a bumper.

31. Keep working on your ministry skill, your sermon preparation, your sermon delivery, your people skills. Become a lifelong learner. Continually upgrade yourself

32. Get in the habit of never taking yourself too seriously, superiority comp1ex is inexcusable in a pastor. Be willing to apologize and admit wrong.

33. Remember, your board members are not the enemy, neither is your neighbouring pastor or church.

34. Develop a hobby and leisure activities, but don't let any of them control and dominate you.

35. Just be nice! Remember who you are serving. It is always good to be good, because the pay is good. Forgive and forbear.

36. Remember to live each day at a time and to live with eternity in view.

37. Sow seed and invest in the life and ministry of others.

38. Be a developer and not a limiter of people. Your converts today are your future.

39. Make the Holy Spirit your senior partner. Without Him, you are nothing.

40. Ask for the prayers and intercessions of your people. Don't be too proud to request for prayers. Have intercessors to uphold you.
