In an encounter with Bishop Okonkwo recently, she told Daily Sun the reasons she sobbed at the event. "I was crying because I was overwhelmed. I was saying to God, is this me or somebody else? I cried because of the heaviness of the consecration.
You know, there were questions they asked us. One of this was that are you ready to lay down year life and all that? It was too much for me. I was meditating, I said, God, please help me. That was the only thing I was saying. While they were doing everything, I was not there but I was asking God some questions."
Then you ask her how she felt the day she knew she would become a bishop. Her response: "Oh God!, I thought the day would never come." The Presiding bishop said that about 2 years ago and she was praying, telling God, let this cup "pass me by, but nevertheless, it is not my will but God's will to be done."
With the consecration, she is now on the same pedestal with her husband, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, the visioner of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM). So, how does her husband feel about her new status? She replies: "He's the one that laid hands on me. Whatever I do, the presiding bishop is not intimidated with what God is doing with his wife. Don't forget that whatsoever I have to do I relate to God and to him. The men shouldn't feel humiliated. The women also should be careful, because each time I go to minister anywhere in Nigeria, Africa or abroad, I always give tribute to my husband, I always say he allowed me to be there if not I wouldn't be here."
Even as an anointed woman of God, she is one woman that has the knack for good things. On this note, you sought her opinion about the dress sense of Christian sisters: "Any fashion we are putting on, we should look at it this way." Does it glorify God? He wants us to show the world a life that is yielded. There's this outfit they cut halfway, your tummy will be coming out, it is not for a child of God. Dress fashionably but not exposure. If you want to wear a skirt you shouldn't wear anything that is above the knee. Anything you wear, wear to the glory of God.
Bishop Peace Okonkwo gave her life to Christ in 1974 at the Scripture Union Fellowship. A graduate of Morris Cerrullo School of Ministry and Rhema Bible Training Centre, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was ordained into the full time ministry in August 1982. |
