After 12 hours with hired assassins, Reverend Segun Agbetuyi, the Managing Director of Omegabank PLC, one of Nigeria's leading banks, made a sinner’s desperate effort to reach God, but his dancing totems and raven images stood between him and the road to total conversion, until the burden of reviving a dead bank brought him down on his knees in a long night of blood, sweat and prayers.
Hand of God in his priesthood and reputation as a top banker?
I often pray for people with this expression: May you live and prosper according to God’s prophecies for you. And the prophecy for me before I was born has been partly fulfilled recently. I am particularly happy because my forebears brought Christianity to the part of the country I come from through the Anglican Faith and they suffered persecution for it. And in the mysterious way of God, the Lord has used my ordination to bring priests of the Anglican Communion to my village. The Archbishop of Lagos and 10 other Bishops graced the occasion.

I was actually ordained priest of the Anglican Church in July 2001. The idea was to have the ordination in my village, but satan attacked and all types of things
happened then. My colleagues on the board suffered all types of calamities, the chairman of the board lost two very important people in his nuclear family including his 47-year-old daughter, another one had his junior brother brutally murdered; another, a royal father was chased by assassins in his palace, he barely escaped and a director was almost killed by armed robbers in his village. The worst of these tragedies was the loss by automobile accident of two very young officers of the bank. That hit me to the marrow and I didn’t have the heart to continue with the ordination.

But the Lord Bishops got together in prayer for me and came to the bank to pray. And they saw the ordination through in a very silent way. There was no way I could jubilate, so I had my thanksgiving six months after. But, sometimes when the Lord is doing good, we think He is doing evil because the ordination eventually attracted more bishops and personalities than would have been the case if it had been done earlier.

Mission in life
I have been an evangelist for over a decade and have preached the word in various denominations in Nigeria. I have preached the word in The Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Winners Church. I have preached in Foursquare Church. I have preached in and outside Nigeria. My call to the office of priesthood is a promotion, but it is in no way different from what I have done before. Each priest has a peculiar ministry. My ministry is in the preaching of the word.

I am at heart an evangelist and I do not believe in the prosperity messages that are being spread. No doubt, God’s purposes for us are good purposes as in Jeremiah 29 Verse 11, but I believe in message of salvation and salvation does not come cheap.

Salvation has obstacle on the way. And these obstacles are often over-powered by grace not by work. I intend to continue to preach the real word according to John Chapter One verse One. It says that “in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.” And in verse 14, it says, “this word became flesh and permeated people’s lives.”

Yes, a lot is happening in Christendom today, but that must be expected. You had an explosion of cChurches in Nigeria and what do you expect Satan to do? To fold his arms and see his kingdom encroached upon. He is fighting back. He is sending the spirit of falsehood into so many people and only the grace of God and true discernment of the Holy Spirit can tell us those who are preaching the true message of God. Nobody deceives the whole word forever; with time we will begin to see certain experiences.

Early experiences and encounter with God
I was born with what you will call at that time, the proverbial silver spoon. My father was a headmaster. He was a big man by 1960 standards. My mother was a teacher and I remember when I was growing up, there were not less than 14 house helps in the mission house where we lived and my father was paying their school fees. My father went to the Second Word War, came back and fell ill and he never recovered from the illness. He died16 years later.

That affected the family because when it was time to go to college, I couldn’t go after passing the entrance to my first choice school- Government College, Ibadan. I passed the examination from primary four and that was not unusual considering the background of my parents.

So I spent three more years in primary school and from there I went to modern school and eventually I went to college in Ado-Ekiti, walking by road without any expense on transportation. I was going in when my mates in the primary school were coming out. Then, I was driven away for non-payment of school fees. I went on for three years without new shoes and clothes.

As a young man I was influenced by the psychology that God was unfair to my family and myself. If he was fair certainly not to my family and myself. But God did not leave me alone. Certainly, there is a seed of God in each of us and as you carry that seed, no matter how far you run, that seed in you will make him to get you.

Jonah ran and got caught in the belly of a fish
and he ended where God sent him that he didn’t want to go. Saul persecuted Christians and he himself was persecuted as a Christian. I remember when I was teaching in the university, I would fail a student in my class if I saw him carrying the Bible. That was how rebellious I was against God.

God first of all broke me down, that is He moleculised me. He broke me down to my various parts. You see when we walk with our heads high, we never know how big God is. You can see the sky, you can see the front, and you can see the one at the back. When a problem hits you and you are flat on your back, then you can see that God is big. It was at the low point as it happens with many people that I turned to God and when I turned to him, I discovered He has been facing me all the time.
