Rev. (Dr.) Mrs. Funke Adetuberu is indeed a woman in a million. One character that stands out is her habitual adoration for God and her husband on whom she showers accolades at every stage in all her discussions. Very few women do that. Funke rose from a disappointing but humble background that truncated her classroom education and through inspiration from God and dedication to reading became a pastor, inspirational speaker and proprietor of an institute where you are prepared for matrimony. Today, the school has graduated close to a thousand students and mankind is getting better by the day. This counselor tackles some questions on relationship in this interview conducted in Ibadan recently. Excerpts.
Christianity and the modern woman
Yes, the modern woman can live within the framework of Christian injunction. And that is where Christ, the foundation comes in. The wise man builds his house on the rock while the foolish build on the sand. When the wind comes, only one will stand. Why? The foundation. For any woman to live a fulfilled life that pleases God, she has to have her foundation in Christ. Women who build their destinies in Christ are those who subject themselves to all the injunctions in the bible including submission to the husband.

Roles for Pastors’ wives?
As a matter of fact, there are three types of women in
this bracket: a woman who is called and is married to the called, for example, Aquilla and Priscilla. The second is the woman who is called and is married to the chosen, meaning the wife is called but the husband is not.

This type is often difficult to come by in our society because men tend to dominate and dictate the lives of their wives. But abroad, where women are a little free, it happens, for example, Joyce Meyer. Also in the bible, Deborah and her husband Lapidoth who was mentioned just once was in the background.

The third category is the chosen woman married to a husband who is called. Meaning, the husband has the pulpit ministry and the wife is at the background. This is the most common setting in Nigeria. We need to appreciate these women who are not seen but are behind the scene.

If the husbands are not comfortable at home, they can’t have any successful ministry. The most important thing is that such pastors should make sure that their wives are fulfilled. The women too must engage themselves in one function or the other so as not to be idle or be seen as dummies.

Are women’s problems self-inflicted, cultural, or crass ignorance ?

I personally know that the bulk of the pains of mankind are out of ignorance. Ignorance is the worst killer disease. Now, taking it to the realm of women, if a woman is unable to discover herself, she wouldn’t be able to recover most things.

Our culture often hampers and discourages women from searching for knowledge to better their lots. For example, immediately a woman gets married, her enthusiasm to go back to school is greatly impaired or truncated unlike men who will keep them at home and proceed.
The men have also been assisted by our culture to put women down, so if I will put it on gradation, I’ll say our problems are more of self-inflicted because of ignorance, then the society helping the men.

Women and the problem of mankind?
As far as the Lord is concerned, the greatest blame is still on men, not women. Agreed that the woman was tempted, if the man had disagreed with her, the catastrophe that befell mankind would have been averted. But the man took it sheepishly and even tried to shift blame when their sin found them out! I wouldn’t apportion any percentage to anyone in particular. They both fell.

W
omen surround men as a wife, mother, sister, nurse, secretary, concubine, girlfriend, fiancée, etc. Men are what women made them to be.
I agree with you and I have always said that there are three women around: a woman her generation will curse, a woman her generation will ignore and a woman her generation will bless.

For instance, the wife of Lot who made no impact in the lives of her children. Having carried a child in the womb for nine months, so many forget that that is just the beginning. If you mould your child well, you have a good son, who can raise a good home.

Also, I teach that you can’t change a man; rather you can change yourself to change your husband. If a woman can compose herself and comport herself well, men will be all right.

However, I know that some men are really bad that there is nothing their wives could do for them that would please them. May be it has to do with their background. But if such a man and the woman know God, there can’t be problem.

Why the School?
I believe that the only certificate you get in life without going to schools is the wedding certificate. Everybody gets the certificate before you face the tests and that is why so many people fail in marriage. School of Finishing Touches is to raise ladies that hope for the best home and outstanding relationships. There is so much to be done in marriage. Just this morning, a pastor came to me, contemplating how to divorce his wife. The man does not know how to handle his wife; neither does the wife know how to handle her husband. Of course, if they know better, they will both live better.
The school works mostly with younger women to have an understanding to make them stand. To fail to prepare is to prepare to fail. We prepare women for the shocks of marriage so that when you go out there, you are well fortified beyond the options of divorce.

School of Finishing Touches

We teach various things like Handling In-laws, Knowing Your Husband, Family Finance, Raising Godly Children, and Communication in Marriage. I found out that in most homes, couples don’t communicate, they only talk. Other topics include What Every Man Wants In A Woman, Attitudes, Mentality, and Sex, a big topic most pastors don’t preach on the pulpit.
Materials
Readers are leaders. I love reading. If I have hundred thousand Naira, and I entered into a bookshop, my husband had to stop me before I expend the whole money on books. Someone once said if you want to hide something from a fool, just put it in a book. He won’t read it. If you read other people’s mind as expressed in a book, all you have is bigger mind.
